How to stop a candle tunneling, and how to fix one that already has

Tunneling wastes up to a third of what you paid for. It is almost always caused on the first burn, and it is fixable.

The short versionGive the first burn enough time for the melt pool to reach the edge of the vessel, roughly one hour per inch of diameter. That single habit prevents almost every tunneling problem we saw in testing.

Five of the 35 candles we burned for this index tunneled. In every case the cause was the same, and in every case it happened during the first session.

Why it happens

Wax has a memory. The first time you burn a candle, the melt pool spreads outward from the wick until you blow it out, and the edge of that pool sets the boundary the candle will return to on every subsequent burn. If you cut the first session short, you set a narrow boundary, and the candle will burn straight down inside it leaving a wall of wax around the outside.

Preventing it

  • Plan the first burn. Do not light a new candle twenty minutes before bed.
  • Trim the wick to 5 mm before every session, including the first one. A tall flame burns fuel rather than spreading a pool.
  • Burn on a level surface away from moving air. A draught pushes the flame sideways and pools the wax unevenly.
  • Stop at four hours. Past that the wick mushrooms, the vessel gets hot, and you are not gaining anything.

Fixing a candle that has tunneled

Two methods, in order of how much you care about the candle.

The long burn

Light it and leave it for three to four hours in a warm room. If the tunnel is shallow, the pool will slowly reclaim the wall. This works about half the time and it costs nothing.

The foil collar

Wrap aluminium foil around the top of the vessel, folding it inward over the rim to leave a hole above the flame. The foil traps heat against the wax wall and melts it back down. Check every 30 minutes and stop as soon as the surface is level. Do not leave a foil-wrapped candle unattended, and do not do this with a cracked or thin-walled vessel.

Which candles tunnel most

Wide vessels with a single short wick are the worst offenders, because the wick has to heat a large surface area from one point. The two brands in our index that tunneled during testing both fit that description. Multi-wick jars and narrow single-wick glasses were the most forgiving.

Questions

How long should the first burn of a candle be?

One hour for every inch of vessel diameter, until the melt pool reaches the edge of the glass. For most 8 oz candles that is three to three and a half hours.

Can you fix a tunneled candle?

Often, yes. A single three to four hour burn reclaims a shallow tunnel. For a deeper one, wrap foil over the rim to trap heat against the wax wall, check every 30 minutes, and stop once the surface is level.

Why does my candle burn down the middle?

The first burn was cut short, so the wax remembered a narrow melt pool. Wax memory sets on session one and every later burn follows the same boundary.

Should I trim the wick every time?

Yes, to about 5 mm. An untrimmed wick produces a tall flame that generates soot and burns fuel without spreading the pool, which makes tunneling more likely and cuts your scent throw.
